In my presentation I will make you wonder about why are fish so different. Knowing why fish are different helps us understand how different fish can/will react to climate change, for example. Most of my presentation focuses on what is marine fish ecology, what we know already about it and what we are still missing. In my PhD, I am trying to fill some of those gaps and improve a model that simulates marine fish. If the model is good enough to capture what we see in real life, then we can use it to predict what will happen with climate change, overfishing, bad water quality, etc. My work is mainly used to advance the field of marine ecology, and to inform policy/decision making in fisheries, aquaculture, and conservation management. How did I end up here? I wanted to be a biologist when I was in high school but ended up doing my Bachelors in Electrical and Computers Engineering in my home country, Portugal. When I finished, I came to Denmark to study Ocean Engineering in DTU and got my Masters specialization in Oceanography (fundamental study of the oceans) and Observation technology (technologies used to advance oceanography). My PhD combines both fundamental research on theoretical marine ecology and ecosystem-based marine management advice.
