Power systems are one of the most overlooked machines humans have ever built. Whether we turn on the TV, switch on a lamp, or charge our phone, we always assume that power is available at that power socket. Somehow, electricity is there, ready, waiting for us to choose to need it. Our society has been built on having power at our disposal every hour of every day of the year. We are so used to this energy availability that we almost take for granted that power is there. Sometimes, we even forget about the enormous social, economic, and environmental effort that it needs. In this presentation, I'll try to shed some light on the electric power system and how we prepare and operate it so that power is always available. We'll review the power system infrastructure, which connects all power sockets in Denmark and Europe, together through hundreds of thousands of kilometres of cables, and how we ensure it runs continuously. Finally, I'll review the primary methods we have to ensure system stability, why it is so difficult to integrate more renewable energy sources with the current operating paradigm, and review several new ideas on how we can improve it.
