What do you think of when I say ceramics? I bet it's not that they can be used for sustainable energy technologies. Here at DTU Energy, I focus on how I can make different ceramic pieces with different functions for enegy applications. My specific focus is on how to enhance these functions by introducing holes or pores into the pieces. I create multilayer structures, with each layer containing a different level of porosity. These pieces are then tested for how functional they are to see if there is an improvement in performance. These types of technologies approach sustainability from an energy perspective. From hydrogen production to using vibrations to make electricity, as, for example, seen in microphones.
I always knew I wanted to go into sustainable energy, however, my path to becoming a PhD student was not easy. I am someone who suffers from mental illness and has been in psychiatry since the age of 18. I graduated high school from England and I wanted to study abroad. I also wanted to study a broad range of topics that I could pick. So I went to the Netherlands for my bachelor. I then split my master over Uppsala and DTU for mental health reasons. I have been at DTU since then. I would like to discuss my experience being severely mentally ill, how I navigated that, as well as how I came to focus on ceramic materials.
I look forward to visiting your class!
