My name is Puck and I am a PhD student from the Netherlands. My research is all about colon cancer. I analyze complex biological data and try to make predictions about patients. Are they going to respond to treatment? Will they have side effects? Will their cancer come back after surgery?
This kind of research is very important, because it is an important step for creating better treatments. This will lead to better survival and a better quality of life for patients.
When I was in high school, I loved biology and the human body. I also was really good at math and enjoyed solving puzzles. However, I did not know that these things could come together in one job. I studied life sciences and mathematics separate from each other in my Bachelor's in the Netherlands and only learned about how to combine them when I wrote my thesis. I learned that I needed to learn some computer science to be the language that connects these two subjects. So for my Master's I moved to Denmark and started learning how to integrate these two fields at DTU. I loved my Master program and writing my thesis, so I was very excited to continue doing similar research as a PhD student now.
