Engineering the future with Additive Manufacturing

Faglige nøgleord: Additive manufacturing, 3d printing, Manufacturing, materials

Oplæg tilgængeligt på:engelsk

The goal would be to have an introduction to additive manufacturing (AM) which is most commonly known as 3D printing.

Additive manufacturing has come a long way since the 1980s, when it was just a nascent area of research to where it is now, being used for making products in real-life application (Eg: bicycle from Pinarello, mascara from Chanel). What is interesting that it has some overlap with existing manufacturing processes, so it can make parts like those from traditional processes but allowing for more complexity and much lesser raw material use/waste (Eg: AM in production at BMW).

However what is exciting that it’s added capabilities have pushed the limits of manufacturing far enough to begin a new generation of products in certain fields (Eg: biomedical implants from BellaSeno and Ossiform, building constructed using COBOD printers).

The presentation will have the following structure,

  • Introduction to self- Personal introduction & journey from high school to a PhD
  • Higher level introduction- Explain the manufacturing principle of AM, introduce the manufacturing technologies under the umbrella of AM and give examples of applications
  • Technical introduction to one of the AM techniques (laser powder bed fusion also known as selective laser sintering/melting)- explain laser and material interaction, use that as a basis for explaining laser based manufacturing of powder materials (selective laser sintering), focus only on polymers (the technology is also used to manufacture metallic parts but that will not be explained as much detail), give an introduction to polymers used today in the technology and talk about the current state of the art in terms of capabilities, explain the type of research pushing the boundaries for future applications
  •  Question and answer session.

Hence giving them a taster for the technology, the science behind it and what they can expect of it in the future.

During the presentation activities will be planned to set up and maintain an environment for open dialogue. The activities will include the following but not limited to it.

  • Ice breaker game
  • Quiz activity
  • Polls/vote

Based on discussions with the teacher the structure and content will be tailored. Based on that it will be decided if props and/or samples will add to the experience and carrying them to the school will be agreed with the teacher.
