1. Scientific description:
Bacteria and fungi are essential for keeping ecosystems balanced; meanwhile, they are also key players in biotechnology. Their abilities derive from their DNA, with a series of biological processes determining how they grow and support biotechnological applications and ecosystems. Thanks to advances in DNA sequencing, we now have powerful tools that can read genetic information quickly and affordably. However, better software platforms are still needed to manage and analyze this massive amount of data.
First, I will explain how scientists collect and study genetic data, from nature to the lab, including entire microbial communities as well as individual genomes. Next, I will explore what this genetic information can tell us and how it benefits society. Finally, I will share our current project, where we are developing an advanced software platform to organize and analyze genetic data more efficiently. This will help scientists better predict microbial functions, understand their interactions in nature, identify useful microbes, and improve the experimental design of biotechnology researchers.
2. My experience:
During my studies, I learned laboratory techniques focused on aquaculture biotechnology and concentrated on data analysis in marine ecosystems, including both sequencing and abundance data. Afterward, I worked on constructing databases for pioneering agricultural research, developing image analysis tools for forestry policy, and analyzing data from animal husbandry field experiments.
I have a diverse range of experience, including work in terrestrial and marine fields, laboratory research, and computational development, which I hope to share to inspire students.
3. Exercise:
If students have their own computers, we can run basic abundance data analysis or process sequence data. If not, I can provide sequences along with their taxonomy, allowing them to search for the microorganism and explore its sequence order.
