The project is about enzymes, where they are found in the nature, and how humankind use them, change them and use them for their own purposes. We use enzymes in our everyday life without even noticing it. Denmark has famous companies like Novonesis that are dedicated to creating enzyme-based products. In my presentation, I will describe how to become an enzyme engineer and how enzyme engineers are working towards building a greener future. I am planning to make a quiz and bring some reagents to produce a color with enzymes (There will not be anything living or any GMO, so it is safe).
My project is relevant to sustainability on many levels. Enzymes that I engineer will eventually replace today's fossil fuel-based petrochemistry, and biosolutions will remove the polluting effects of many industries to a great extent. That will have positive effects for the environment. Replacement of petrochemical industry with biochemistry-based production could eliminate 2.5 billion CO2 t emmission annually. That is like removing 40% of the cars on the worlds' roads!
I am originally from Turkey and studied in Turkey until starting my PhD in Denmark. I have an engineering mind and in high-school, I wanted to be an aerospace engineer. Then, I changed my mind and decided to study synthetic biology, which is applying the engineers perspective on living things. I am glad that I studied in this field because there are a lot of things to be discovered, and the discoveries will have a huge potential to transform industries that we have it today.
